Motherboard: why the name

Motherboard is the backbone of a computer. It is a large semiconductor board containing all the internal connections (buses), internal ports (for internal devices) and various IC's and chips that control multiple functions of the computer system.

All internal components like the CPU, RAM, GPU and add-on cards as well as internal devices like the Hard drives and optical drives are connected to their respective compatible ports on the Motherboard.
Even the external peripheral devices of a computer system are connected to ports present on the outer back side of the motherboard. So, it is rightly named "motherboard".
