RAM: what it is

RAM or Random Access Memory is a memory module consisting of hundreds to thousands of memory cells. It is called so, because data can be stored and fetched randomly from any cell in the module.
RAM is used as a temporary storage for assisting the CPU in providing the data and instructions being processed currently.

RAM is mainly of two types: static and dynamic:
The one we are more familiar with is the Dynamic RAM. Typically in the order of GB's, it is cheaper of the two. Static RAM is the one that is embedded in various electric devices, and also in the CPU in form of Cache.
Static RAM is faster than the former, more expensive and its cells hold data in place unlike Dynamic RAM.
